Impulsive food purchases tied to Too little Sleep, study finds

News Picture: Impulsive Food Purchases Tied to Too Little Sleep, Study Finds

Thursday, September 5 HealthDay News)-sleep-deprived people to more food and more high-calorie items in the supermarket to buy can lead, finds a new study.

"Our finding provides a strong rationale for the assumption that patients with concerns about caloric intake and weight gain will maintain a healthy, normal sleep schedule,", said study author in the first Colin Chapman, the University of Uppsala, in a magazine press release.

For the study researchers 14 normal weight men in Sweden was a budget of about $50 and told them how they out of a possible 40 food could contain 20 high-calorie and 20 low-calorie foods to buy. The men did this after a boozy night of sleep deprivation, and after a good night's sleep.

Before they bought, the men a typical breakfast were to minimize the impact of hunger on their food purchases, according to the study, published in the journal of obesity online Sept. 5.

Deprivation as sleep after a good night's sleep is amounted to 9 percent more calories and 18 percent more food after a boozy night purchases. The researchers also found that in the morning after sleep deprivation, the men had higher blood levels of the hormone (ghrelin) that increases hunger.

However, there was no connection between ghrelin levels and food to buy. This suggests that factors such as exciting decision-making in food is a purchasing decisions can play stronger role, said the researchers.

Chapman and his colleagues said, follow-up studies are needed to determine whether sleep also occur withdrawal-related changes in the purchasing behavior of food, if people are partially sleep deprived.

Future research also sleep deprivation should review the potential impact on all types of purchasing decisions so the authors of the study.
